Fall is one of the most important times to have your property sprayed for ticks. Why? Ticks thrive in cool, damp weather, and with all of the newly fallen leaves, they’ll have the perfect place to hide. It’s true that some of those same weather conditions exist in the Spring when the bite risk is the highest for the ticks, but this is the time of year when the adult ticks are either getting ready to mate, or are already pregnant. The more of these ticks that can be eliminated in the Fall, the better. Eliminating them now means that there will be less ticks to lay eggs, and less eggs to hatch in the Spring, thus reducing the Spring & Summer tick population.
Don’t the ticks die in the winter? Not really. The ticks that don’t find the proper barrier from the cold, such as ground cover or snow, might die. A warm, mild winter allows them to thrive. In extreme cold temperatures, the cover that they find to live under allows them to survive the winter. The last few winters have not only allowed them to stick around and wreak havoc much earlier than we normally have to deal with them, but their population seems to be increasing.
